Although I had fiddled around with the alternative developing process dubbed caffenol once before, last fall during my semester abroad in Guatemala, my first stateside attempt at developing a roll of film and making a slightly acceptable print from said film reminded me oh how big an impact altering just one variable can make with an already sticky (no pun intended) alternative process.

Now try changing all the variables: shifting from a Central American country over 1600 miles south of my current location, from a closet-size darkroom in an after school center to a college classroom, from German-speaking colleagues to art-speaking classmates, from an aisle’s worth of café instantaneo and juggling spanish names for chemicals intended to refer to certain (apparently rare) cleaning ingredients to locating washing soda easy-peasy in the supermarket and having to choose between only two brands of instant coffee.
